MOUNT HOLLY - The faculty at Rancocas Valley Regional High School will host a charity basketball game this week to honor the memory of two former basketball players. The basketball game will pit faculty members against officers from the Mount Holly Police Department, and will raise money for a scholarship in memory of Cody Haynes and Christopher Harris.

The game will begin at 6 p.m. Friday in the school gymnasium on Jacksonville Road. Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for students.

Haynes lived in Lumberton and played on the junior varsity team. Harris lived in Mount Holly and had played for the varsity team. Each died in separate incidents.

"It's an opportunity to honor the memory of the young men and to raise money for a scholarship in their names," said Holly Myers, a friend of Haynes' mother, Dawn Wolfe, who came up with the idea.

Myers worked with Tony Lotierzo, the school's athletic director, to organize the event.

Haynes was a 16-year-old junior when died Nov. 3, 2002, in a car accident while returning from a visit with family in Maryland.

Harris died Sept. 1 after collapsing during a pickup basketball game. Harris, 18, graduated from Rancocas Valley this year.

"It's important not to forget the kids and to keep them in our prayers," Lotierzo said. "They were good kids."

The basketball game is a good way for students to remember Haynes and Harris and help deal with the emotions over their deaths, Lotierzo said.

"A lot of kids don't know how to express their sorrow," he said. "This is a way to get everyone back together and in the gym."

Lotierzo said he is expecting a good turnout for the game based on the support received from the school and community.

"Everyone is enthusiastic about it," he said.

A three-on-three basketball tournament featuring teams of students, faculty and police officers will be held after the game, Lotierzo said.
